Originally from Topeka, Kansas, Derek E. Swader, O.D. obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry from Washburn University in 2006. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Optometry degree in 2010 from the University of Missouri - St. Louis College of Optometry in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Swader was nominated by the faculty as the UMSL recipient of the 2010 Vistakon Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care given out each year by the American Optometric Foundation. Dr. Swader was also the UMSL recipient for the 2010 Excellence in Low Vision Award sponsored by Eschenbach. He was also a member of Tri-Beta Optometric Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Optometrists. Dr. Swader is currently an active member of both the American Optometric Association and the Kansas Optometric Association.
Dr. Swader married his high school sweetheart Kimberly in 2005 and they have two
young sons, Carter and Camden. The Swaders currently reside in Topeka and are very
active in their local church helping with youth ministry and outreach.
