About Us

Dr. Bill Carriger is a native Topekan.  His father practiced Optometry for 40 years on Kansas Ave. in Topeka.  Dr. Bill started working for his dad when he was in Junior High and worked summers until graduating from Optometry School.  He graduated from Topeka West High School in 1965.  He graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelor of Science in 1969.  He graduated from Indiana University School of Optometry in 1973.  He was ranked first in his class on graduation.  He then was appointed a lecturer and taught at the School of Optometry until 1978, when the Carrigers moved back to Topeka.  While at the University, he was the Director of Screening Services.  He took teams of optometry students throughout the state of Indiana, visiting schools and screening schoolchildren for visual problems.  He also conducted glaucoma screenings throughout the state.

Dr. Bill is an elder of Central church of Christ in Topeka.  His hobbies include canoeing, camping, fishing, farming, and hunting.  His main passion is for Christian Camping.  He was camp director for over 20 years for the elementary session of Christian Camp, Inc.  He is involved with Tallgrass Christian Camp as a member of the Board of Directors.  The Carrigers have donated 156 A. in Wabaunsee County to establish a camp for the churches of Christ in Northwestern Missouri and Northeastern Kansas.  The Main Lodge is being built in 2005 and the first camp sessions are scheduled for 2006.  See www.tallgrasschristiancamp.org

Dr. Diana Carriger grew up in Bloomington, In.  She graduated from Bloomington South High School in 1969.  She received both her Bachelor of Science (1973) and Doctor of Optometry (1975) from Indiana University.   She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.  She graduated first in her class also.  She was a clinical instructor at the School of Optometry after graduation, until the Carrigers moved to Topeka in 1978.  She was appointed by the governor to be the Secretary-Treasurer for the State Board of Examiners in Optometry, in which capacity she served for 5 years.  

 Dr. Diana studied in Taiwan and in France during her high school years, and has traveled in Europe, Africa and Asia with her family.  She has been a Girl Scout for 45 years as of 2005.  She earned her First Class Scout Award and also was selected for an International Wider Opportunity in 1969, as one of 16 Girl Scouts representing the United States in Switzerland for the Jubilee Camp. She was a troop leader for 20 years, and a trainer for the Council for 15 years.  She has received numerous awards from the Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council.   She teaches Bible Classes at Central church of Christ in Topeka.  Her hobbies include;  reading, needlework, swimming, canoe camping and outdoor cooking.

The Carrigers were married in 1972 and have 2 children, Michelle and Greg.

 

The doctors have made 7 trips with VOSH, Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity.  They work for a week with indigent local people providing free eyecare.  They have been to Honduras five times, and to Bolivia and Thailand.  Dr. Diana currently serves as a Co-Director for the Kansas Chapter of VOSH.
